“Bold, entertaining…The show, which heads from here to Chicago, looks great.” Los Angeles Times
“Under the skillful direction of Pasadena Playhouse’s artistic director Sheldon Epps, the play is a delight. The dialogue snaps and sparkles with witty, homespun humor, and the dancing, choreographed by Kenneth Lee Roberson, crackles and pops with energy…The superb singing is worth the price of admission alone.”

“Get your toe-tappin’, finger-snappin’ self over to the Pasadena Playhouse, because PURLIE is in town and it’s damn near perfect.” Canyon News
The national tour of Sheldon Epps’ jubilant staging of PURLIE is currently in the works. For further information about PURLIE on tour, please don’t hesitate to contact us!
PURLIE is based on Ossies Davis’ landmark comedy, PURLIE VICTORIOUS, which Davis wrote in order that segregation would be “laughed out of existence.” The story:
Cap’n Cotchipee owns the small Southern town and everyone it. With ice cold blue-blood in his veins and a bullwhip in his hand, he has oppressed the townsfolk for as long as anyone can remember; and now he is threatening to destroy Big Bethel, the church that is the heart of the community.
Enter Purlie Victorious Judson – a former town resident who returns from his far-flung travels as a preacher with a plan to save the church, the town and its people.
With his wit, courage, and charm, Purlie is indeed victorious – and with its buoyant mix of comedy, romance and wisdom, and its soul-soaring, foot-stomping score, PURLIE inevitably sends audiences out of the theater singing, smiling and believing in a better tomorrow.
